Before we dive into figuring out which website SSL certificate is best, lets first confirm that you do indeed need a digital certificate. VeriSign, one of the premier certificate authorities, suggests that you get an SSL cert if:

• You have an online store or accept online orders and credit cards.
• Your business partners log in to confidential information on an extranet.
• You have offices that share confidential information over an intranet.
• You process sensitive data such as address, birth date, license, or ID numbers.
• You need to comply with privacy and security requirements.
• You value privacy and expect others to trust you.

Which Certificate is right for me?

While each Certificate Authority (CA) uses different product names, there are 4 main types of SSL certificates. Read the short descriptions to help decide which SSL certificate is best for your website.

Domain SSL Certificate (Class 2)
This is the lowest level of SSL Certificate where only the domain, or web address, is verified. Choose a Domain SSL if your website exchanges any personal data with your visitors. The Domain SSL digital cert is also okay for less than 50 transactions per month.

Standard SSL Certificate (Class 3)
Both the domain as well as the individual and/or organization/business that own the website is verified. Get a Standard SSL if you’re a medium size ecommerce site with somewhere in the range of 50-250 web sales per month.

Wildcard SSL Certificate

Both the domain as well as the individual and/or organization/business that own the website is verified. This is essentially the same SSL certificate as the Standard SSL with one main exception. The Wildcard SSL allows you to cover subdomains, or multiple different locations within the same website. For example, securing, and under one certificate is possible with a wildcard SSL certificate.

Extended Validation SSL Certificate
This is the “turn your browser bar green” SSL. Extended Validation (EV) is the highest level of validation:

•Verifies that your organization is legally registered and active.
•Verifies the address and phone number of your organization.
•Verifies that your organization has exclusive right to use the domain specified in the EV Certificate.
•Verifies that the person ordering the certificate has been authorized by the organization to do so.
•Verifies that your organization is not on any government blacklists and is not a high risk for phishing.
