If you created your Facebook application utilizing Google's App Engine, you may be able to leverage Google's free SSL certificate. However, you can't use your own domain name. You have to keep your URL a "yourappurl.appspot.com to use Google's free SSL in this instance. Understandably, a lot of app creators want to use their own domain - and they should. A cheap $12.99/year cost for a SSL shouldn't dissuade you from using your own web address.
