Symantec has started a new marketing program for Verisign - Free SSL certificate trials. Marketers know that "free" works. "Free" is good copy that gains potential customer's attention. Plus "free" appeals at both an emotional and rational level to people. Symantec recently acquired Verisign. Symantec in my opinion is a better marketing organization than Verisign was. Symantec has gone through the customer acquisition wars in computer anti-virus software with their Norton products, and learned a few tricks I'm sure. Free trials are one of those marketing "tricks". Adding a SSL certificate to your website takes time and effort. Once you have one installed, the chances of you removing it and installing another one are slim. I'm sure webmasters will think, "do I really want to go through the effort to install another SSL and save a couple of dollars?" Plus, if you're installing an EV SSL certificate, you have to go through the verification process, which can take some webmaster time as well. So once you've tried installing the SSL, Verisign has you hooked. I'll bet a very high percentage of people that successfully install a SSL certificate on a free trial will keep it and pay the cost of the product. So before you decide to install a free SSL certificate trial, we suggest you approach the decision as if you're making the final decision. Shop a bit. Find the best, cheapest SSL certificate that fits your website's needs. Then do the math. Verisign SSL certificate's are expensive. Their EV SSL certificate is 3-10 times more expensive than other competitors. So saving a month or two of cost in a free SSL certificate trial doesn't make up for the difference you would save by using another SSL certificate provider. Just something to think about before you "fall" for Symantec's new marketing approach. Compare SSL Certificate prices:
